Need something to read besides that beach book or another editorial about Maine’s upcoming gubernatorial election? There have been some really interesting articles about hunger in a variety of publications just in the past month or so:
- Maine has the dubious honor of being #6 in the top 8 states with the highest food costs.
- National Geographic has done an excellent article on the changing face of hunger in America. “Why are people malnourished in the richest country on Earth?”
- This essay by writer Brooke Mclay records her visit to the grocery store with a woman she met who is homeless and parenting her 2 daughters: “What I Learned After Taking a Homeless Mother Grocery Shopping”.
- Finally, New York University masters degree student Leanne Brown developed a cookbook specifically to be helpful to those using SNAP benefits: “Good and Cheap: A SNAP Cookbook.” The photographs are stunning, and the recipes are fun and creative. Ms. Brown has included the cost of each recipe as well as ideas for leftovers. The cookbook is in a PDF form that can be downloaded for FREE, so take a look and try some of the recipes for yourself!
